A home, collected over time

Architect and Designer Luis Barragán

Studio Notes 01

A home reveals something of the soul of the people who live there. What we choose to keep, the objects that accompany us and the combinations we are drawn to tell our story. A well-thumbed book, an inherited piece or a colour we return to: this is where a home’s character begins.

Mixing periods means looking beyond labels. An antique chair can sit comfortably beside a contemporary table when their proportions work together. A curve, a colour or the way two surfaces catch the light can create a connection.

Space matters, too. A distinctive piece often benefits from a quiet wall, a simple lamp or a little more room around it. Leaving space allows the eye to settle and the details to come into focus.

Before choosing something new, take stock of what is already there. Which pieces still work well? Which hold personal meaning? Could a different position, fresh upholstery or better lighting give something a new role? These questions help shape a room around the things that matter.

A home grows with the people who live there. Its soul takes shape through the personal choices that make it their own.
